Dear Japanese Food Lovers,

Hello from Aiko at isfor WA, Oxford!

Have you ever heard of Tanabata, the Japanese Star Festival?
Held on the 7th of July, it’s a day when people write their wishes on colourful paper and hang them on bamboo branches, hoping the stars will carry their hopes across the sky.

This beautiful tradition is inspired by the legend of two star-crossed lovers, Orihime and Hikoboshi, who are allowed to meet just once a year — across the Milky Way.

We also celebrate by enjoying beautiful, seasonal dishes.

Two traditional favourites for Tanabata are:

Milky Way Sōmen
Chilled somen noodles arranged to resemble the Milky Way. Often served with colourful toppings like sliced cucumber, star-shaped carrots and okra — light and refreshing for summer.

Chirashi Sushi
A “scattered” sushi dish made with seasoned rice and a festive assortment of toppings like sashimi, pink fish floss, salmon roe, egg ribbons (kinshi tamago) and fresh vegetables. It’s bright, beautiful, and perfect for celebrations.

These dishes are not only delicious — they’re also a feast for the eyes, bringing joy and togetherness to the table.

In Japan, It is so hot and humid in summer but every street corner, you often see a summer festival and neighbors are gathering and dancing on the street. I don’t miss the heat but I miss the festival 😉

Happy Cooking!

Aiko
