Dear Japanese Food Lovers,

Hello from Aiko at isfor WA, Oxford!

Hope you’re enjoying the summer holidays! ☀️

Time off is great—but do you ever find yourself wondering, “What should I make for the family lunch today?”

Oko-sama Lunch is a fun and colourful Japanese-style lunch plate for kids, featuring small portions of their favourites, all in one tray!

🧑‍🍳 What’s on the plate:

  • 🍙 Mini rice ball (onigiri or ketchup rice)
  • 🍗 Fried chicken (karaage) or mini hamburger steak
  • 🍝 Spaghetti Napolitan or potato salad
  • 🍟 French fries or shrimp fry
  • 🥦 Boiled vegetables or edamame
  • 🍮 Dessert (pudding or fruit jelly)

Arrange everything nicely on a plate or tray. Add a small flag or cute pick for extra fun!

Of course, you don’t have to make everything and no need to serve everything at once.

All of these recipes are featured on isfor WA cookery school, where we share easy and delicious Japanese-inspired meals for the whole family. Stay tuned for more!

By the way, did you know that even the same vegetables can look quite different in Japan and the UK?

For example, Japanese cucumbers are about a quarter the size of those in the UK — much thinner and shorter.

And although they’re both called “radish,” Japan’s daikon is large, long, and white, quite unlike the smaller, rounder radishes common in the UK.

Happy Cooking!

Aiko
