Today, still in the Halloween spirit, we went on a spooky outdoor trail. Surrounded by beautiful yellow and red leaves, we searched for hidden spooky objects — a lovely way to enjoy the last of the autumn festivities.

School starts again next week, but how are you spending your weekend?

By the way, I noticed spinach growing in the garden we visited. Spinach is a popular ingredient in Japan and used in many everyday dishes. One of my favourite ways to enjoy it is simple — lightly blanch plenty of spinach, squeeze out the excess water, cut it into 2-inch lengths, and place it on a plate. Then sprinkle katsuobushi (dried bonito flakes) on top and drizzle a little dashi soy sauce over it.

It’s simple but delicious — the natural sweetness of the spinach pairs beautifully with the umami of the dashi soy sauce, making it a perfect side dish.
